Martha's Vineyard has been a vacation spot for the rich and famous. Notable past vacationers are former President Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton.

This tiny holiday town is the epitome of cosy New England style but you don't have to be a celebrity to enjoy this quick getaway.

Martha's Vineyard is a picturesque New England island with captains' houses and lighthouses, white picket fences, ice-cream shops, an authentic fishing village, a Native American community, miles of pristine beaches and rolling farmland.

Unfortunately, it has been discovered in a big way! If you can survive the hassles of getting to the island, and the crowds and traffic once you arrive, you may just have the perfect vacation. Better yet, visit the island off season, in May or October, when the weather is often mild and the crowds have cleared out.

When the former First Family, the Clintons, chose to vacation on the island several years in a row, it only increased the worldwide fascination with this popular place.

In fact, the island is loaded with celebrities, but you're unlikely to see them as they prefer private house parties. But don't come to this island for the celebrities; it's considered impolite to gawk and, like jaded New Yorkers, the locals barely seem to notice the stars in their midst.

The island consists of six towns, each with its own personality. July and August are the high season on the Vineyard. This is when the Island population jumps from an off-season low of 15,000 people to its summer peak of more than 80,000 on any sunny weekend.

This is when the calendar of Island life fills with attractive choices, from regular events like the Farmers' Market in West Tisbury to the Chilmark Flea Market and the weekly outdoor concerts of the Vineyard Haven Town Band.
