Start by establishing your surfie look. The town of Lahaina on the west coast of Maui has everything you need when it comes to completing your image.
Honolua Wahini is just one of the shops that line the main streets of this popular coastal town. It specialises in girls' surfer gear, and you can pick up everything from rash vests to board shorts.
Now dressed in some funky surf gear, your next step is to hire a surfboard. West Maui Surf Rentals offers a range of surfboards from beginner boards to boards for the serious surfer.
Now you've got your clothes and your board, it's time to take a lesson with surfing legend Buzzy Kerbox.
Buzzy began surfing at the age of 10 and since then has participated in world-wide contests, with his highest ranking of 6th in the world. Having clocked up plenty of useful tips over the years, he's keen to share them with students of the sport. And it doesn't matter how inexperienced you may be - Buzzy reckons he can teach anyone how to surf.
A beginner's surfing lesson is usually held on the nearby beach of Launiupoko, just 3 kilometres from Lahaina.
Buzzy takes you through the moves on the sand before you paddle out on the surfboard. Although it may seem daunting, Buzzy reassures you and guides you throughout the lesson. After a couple of hours of riding waves you'll be well on your way to becoming a surfer.
