As the longest, tallest and widest passenger vessel ever created, Queen Mary 2 was assured of a place in maritime history even before she first put to sea in 2004.

Built by French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique Saint-Nazaire at a cost of A$1 billion, Cunard's 345-metre flagship is almost twice as large as the original Queen Mary, more than double the size of the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 and more than three times the size of the Titanic.

Still the world's second biggest liner in terms of tonnage, QM2 seamlessly combines a classic British heritage with Cunard's hallmarks of nostalgia, opulence and style, evident in sweeping staircases, a grand ballroom and a 360 promenade deck.

Renowned artists were commissioned to produce more than 300 original works of art valued at more than $5 million for QM2, which is also home to the Maritime Quest exhibit tracing the history of transatlantic cruising. A space ratio of 17.5 metres per person makes QM2 one of the most spacious ships at sea, with room for 14 decks of sports facilities, shops, lounges, bars, five pools, no fewer than 10 restaurants and the only planetarium afloat - Illuminations.

Eighty per cent of QM2's 1,310 staterooms are outside cabins and more than 94 per cent of these feature private balconies, while the needs and whims of every two passengers are catered for by the attentive service of one staff member.

QM2 is the world's only liner offering regularly scheduled transatlantic crossings between New York and Southampton, as well as cruises to the Caribbean, Europe, New England and Canada.
