Vanuatu is located 900 kilometres north-east of Sydney - just 3 hours flying time. It used to be called "New Hebrides" until it was christened Vanuatu in 1980 - when it achieved independence and became a republic.
Efate is the third largest island in Vanuatu and is where the nation's capital - Port Vila - is located. Over 40,000 people live on Efate, more than half of them in or around Port Vila. The remaining population live in small villages along the coast. The coastal road route around Efate is 138km.
Port Vila is located around a magnificent natural harbour offering stunning views of Iririki and Ifira islands. It is Vanuatu's international gateway and remains the only town on the island. Port Vila is also an ideal base to plan trips to the outer isles. It curves around Vila Bay and creeps up steep hillsides.
Port Vila is becoming known as the gourmet capital of the South Pacific. The potpourri of expatriate cultures is reflected in food styles served in over forty restaurants and cafes - French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Melanesian and Mediterranean.
