Austinmer is a residential and parkland area, is thought to be named after Henry Austin, a Director of the Board of the Illawarra Mining Company. It was previously known as Sidmouth, North Bulli and Austermere.

Major features of the area include Lady Fuller Park, Austinmer Beach, Austinmer Boat Harbour, Austinmer Beach Park and Glastonbury Gardens.
