Overview

Coonamble Shire Council welcomes you to Coonamble - from the Mountains to the Marshes. A place where the Warrambungle National Park crowds the horizon in the east and the wetlands of the Macquarie Marshes shimmer to the west. A place where the clear starry nights entice stargazing from a campfire. A place where the sunlit plains come alive for rodeos, polocrosse, picnic races and farming life.

As a service centre to the west Coonamble offers a range of shopping experiences from food and clothing to secondary industries. It is central to a range of tourist destinations including day trip to the Lightning Ridge opal fields in the north, the cotton fields to the west and Western Plains Zoo to the south.

The Pilliga State Forest with its stands of eucalypts and salt caves is yet another natural attraction within easy reach. Coonamble is renowned for its diversified rural industries which include extensive grain cropping and large cattle and sheep populations making the district one of the most productive in the state. The unique Castlereagh River runs through the district a river that runs beneath the sand, and when in flood is one of the fastest in the country.

Coonamble is also situated on the Great Inland Way, the flat track to Queensland, and is a great alternate route to western and north Queensland.
