Overview

The harbour is home to 'Honeysuckle' a major waterfront rejuvenation project transforming Newcastle. Working wharves are becoming places of play with the creation of foreshore promenades and open squares offering waterfront cafes and restaurants - all with glorious views.

The Promenade along the harbour foreshore is an easy shared pathway suitable for all the family whether you are walking, roller blading or cycling. Visit the Newcastle Yacht Club or watch as the fishing fleet sails out before dusk. Take a harbour cruise or hire a kayak and explore the Hunter River. The Seafood Cooperative offers the freshest local seafood or for those who prefer to have it prepared for them there are restaurants near the Marina too. Wander through Honeysuckle Markets, off Merewether Street, Sundays 9am to 3pm. Across the way is Harbour Square next to Crowne Plaza Hotel. This is a hub for live entertainment, restaurants and cafs or some people like to fish and catch their own! The Merewether fingers wharves will be open mid 2006 so taking a harbour cruise will be even easier. The Regional Maritime Centre is due to open late 2005 as a highly interactive place on the water that will explore Newcastles strong Maritime heritage.

Go over Cowper Street Bridge and discover the heritage rich port village of Carrington.
