Mayfield is one of Newcastle's oldest suburbs and is located 6 kilometres from Newcastle central business district.

Whilst developing in the 1880s, Mayfield attracted well-to-do Novocastrians who chose to live in villas on the outskirts of the city. It also became a residential area for workers in the nearby steelworks and other industries.
