Overview
Mount Keira is residential, institutional and parkland area, Mount Keira is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "large lagoon" or "high mountain".
Coal mining was established in the 1840's. Growth took place in the late 1800's.
The most significant development occurred during the post-war years.
Major features of the area include the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, the University of Wollongong, University of Wollongong Recreation and Aquatic Centre, Rhododendron Park, Mount Keira, Mount Keira Summit Park, Illawarra District Scouts Camp, Byarong Park, Keira Village Park and Wollongong Botanic Gardens.
