The site of Queanbeyan, New South Wales was first viewed in 1820 by three explorers, Charles Throsby Smith, Joseph Wild and James Vaughan whilst searching for the Murrumbidgee River. The Queanbeyan Visitor Information Centre, 1 Farrer Place, was built in 1924 as the third home of Queanbeyan Municipal Council, the present Queanbeyan City Council Chambers are located in the former School of Arts building constructed in 1927 and the Queanbeyan Museum, containing interesting memorabilia from the regions past, was built in 1876 as the Police Sergeants residence.
