Aboriginal history dates back thousands of years, Captain Charles Sturt arrived in 1830, settlement and grazing began in the 1840s and Wentworth was the nucleus of river trade between New South Wales, Victoria & South Australia. Wentworth retains an historic atmosphere with well maintained buildings, including the Old Wentworth Gaol, Churches, Post Office, and Bank buildings.
