Windang is an established residential area with substantial parklands. Windang is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "scene of a flight".

Major features of the area include the coastal recreation reserves, Perkins Beach, Port Kembla Golf Course, Illawarra Golf Range, Warrigal Aboriginal Arts, Korrongulla Swamp, Boronia park, Pine Tree Park, Primbee Park, Ray Crump Oval, Wetherall Park, Windang Beach and Garden Playground, Windang Foreshore Park and Windang Peninsula Heritage Park.
