Overview

Conargo and Windouran stretches to the north and east of Deniliquin, the village of Conargo itself is 32 kilometres north of the town, and was once a changing station for the famous Cobb & Co stage coaches.

Conargo has long been famous for the hospitality it offers to travellers. The famous Conargo Hotel offers cold beer, good food and a warm welcome. It offers meals, both lunch and dinner, seven days a week, where you can sit on the outdoor terrace overlooking bushland and the Billabong Creek. There is also accommodation for those who wish to break their journey with an overnight stay.

Conargos hospitality expands in a big way on New Years Eve and on Mothers Day, when the village hosts two special events, each of which attracts thousands of visitors. On New Years Eve, Conargo sees out the old year and welcomes the new one with its legendary New Years Eve Charity Ball.

Crowds also flock to the village on Mothers Day for the famous Billabong Bunyip Market, which shows the talent and skill of the regions cottage industries. A huge number of stalls offer quality home made and hand made goods for sale.

Ten kilometres south of Conargo is Clancys Winery, a family business, which offers picnic facilities and complementary cellar door tastings for visitors and tours of the winery. Wine varieties include Taminga, Verdellho, Semilon and Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz and Muscat.

The shire has a diverse agricultural base and offers examples of Australias best irrigation farms as well as vast dry land properties that take in large tracts of the Riverine Plain and offer shelter to the endangered Plains Wanderer birds.
