Wombarra is a rural and residential area, with residential area mainly along the coast.

Wombarra was named from an Aboriginal word meaning "black Duck". Growth took place in the 1880's spurred by the establishment of the coal mining with villages established around the coal mines.

Major features in the area include Wombarra Beach, Illawarra Park and Wombarra Sculpture Gardens.
