Hobart Health and Safety

Hobart's generally a safe and friendly city but take sensible precautions. Don't leave valuables around in clear view, avoid walking alone late at night on the streets, and lock cars and hotel rooms. Don't leave luggage unattended. Those travellers from outside Australia may be horrified at the flies and mosquitoes in this little city, but a good insect repellant should keep you happy. If you are swimming, remember to check there are no rips or dangerous spots on the beach you visit and if you are an inexperienced swimmer stick to patrolled beaches and stay within the flags. Tiger snakes - a highly venomous species for which there is a widely-available antivenene - can be found in the bush surrounding the city - especially on Mount Wellington - during summer. Luckily, the primitive fangs of the Tasmanian variety are less efficient than those of their mainland cousins.
