Solomon Islands

Those lured to the Solomons by the promise of extraordinary natural features will not be disappointed: the islands have a well-deserved reputation as possibly the world's best destination for scuba divers, snorkellers, fishing freaks - and, increasingly, surfers.

Rennell

A mere one-hour flight from Honiara will transport you to yet another world. Rennell is a Shangri-la for ecotourists. Eastern Rennell has been a World Heritage-listed site since 1998 but, despite the locals' hopes, the listing hasn't brought travellers to visit its famous Lake Te'Nggano.

Auki

The province of Malaita has a lovely provincial town called Auki. In the 1920s the town had a perimeter fence to keep the hostile locals away from the nervous Europeans.

Relations have improved considerably, and the town, with a population of around 4000 people, is the most photogenic of the main towns in the country.
