Byron Bay: The Hippest Holiday Spot
By Lisa Wolff, Yahoo!7 Travel

It's hip to be hippie at Byron

It seems that Byron Bay is the place to go. A couple of my hard-working mates, who usually feel under-dressed without a tie, headed there a couple of weeks ago. They came back looking exceptionally chilled with crystals dangling from their necks. There was no hint of anything resembling a tie - except if you count their new tie-dyed kit.

Previously, Byron Bay was reserved for the surfies and herb-smoking flower-children. These days it's hip to be hippie and Byron is a trendy holiday spot drawing city slickers from all over the place.

I reckoned that after the hectic festive season, BB would be the perfect getaway to unwind. It's a short 90 minute flight to the nearest airport at Ballina. You could also fly into Gold Coast airport at Coolangatta in Queensland. Either way, you're only about a 30-40 minute drive from Byron - either by shuttle bus or hiring a car.

It's a good idea to book your accommodation before you go. There is a full range of places to stay from the ultra deluxe 5-star to cool backpackers. We decided to go for a middle of the road serviced apartment (there are a number of these) with a pool in the complex and walking distance to the beach.

Hit the Beach
First up on the list is some good quality chill-out time. Clearly, we need to head straight for Byron's sandy shores. We're talking 30 km of soft white sand and awesome surf breaks. There's the famous Main and Clarke's beaches which are understandably popular and packed with eager sun worshippers. There's a lifeguard station here so it's safe swimming for all. For some peace and quiet and meditation, you can clear your mind on Seven Mile beach, which is also perfect for a horse riding tour. If you prefer tanning au naturale, North Belongil Creek and Kings Beach are just for you.

There's only so much time I can spend reading a book under an umbrella before I'm itching for some activity. Did you know that Byron Bay offers some of the best dive spots in the country at the Julian Rocks Marine Park? There are over 400 species of marine life, including rays and turtles, waiting to be visited here. Another option is the guided snorkelling tour, which can be organised through Byron Bay dive centre.

Other watersports, like surfing lessons, are also available as are canoeing, ballooning and paragliding.

Visit the lighthouse
We may also feel energetic enough to tackle the famed lighthouse walk. The Cape Byron lighthouse is over a hundred years old. Poised atop a 94 metre cliff, it offers some of the most beautiful views in the area. It is a bit of a steep climb to say "hi" to the lighthouse keeper, but it's well worth the effort. If you're feeling extra lazy though, there is a parking lot nearby.

For something a little different, you can stay at one of the lighthouse keepers' cottages, Call +61 2 6685 6552 or email the tourist centre for further information.

Byron Bay Tastes
All this thought of exercise is making me hungry. Byron offers some award-winning dining options, such as Dish, Fins and Raes. But if you're on a tighter budget then there is a good selection of more casual cafes and beach bars. For some quality snacks, try Byron Bay Cookies or visit the very tempting Chocolat factory shop.

A different foodie destination is Tropical Fruit World which is about a 30 minute drive away and offers over 500 varieties of fresh fruit including the intriguing chocolate pudding fruit.

Crystals and more
Byron Bay well deserves its spiritual reputation. It's truly impressive how many alternative therapy offerings are available in one town. You can visit Crystal Castle (20 min drive away) with its lush gardens, statues and tarot card readings. There are also heaps of spa's and healing centres for the mind, body and soul. For ultimate hippiedom, explore the nearby town of Nimbin. It has a hemp embassy, it's colourful, different and celebrates anything against the stream.

I'm feeling relaxed just thinking about my holiday.
