I have fallen in love... sweet, addictive, totally mind blowing love!
The unusual thing is this is not a person, but a place and experience so beautiful and profound that I doubt my ability to fall in love in that way again.
I am savoring my last moments as I float on my back in my private infinity pool, putting off the moment that I must say goodbye to the peaceful lulling ocean of the Sultanate. I remember the mornings, as dawn broke and I padded no more than 20 steps to warm my toes in the water along the 2km calm sandy shores. I look up at the cloudless sky, framed by the majestic sculpture of the Hajjar Mountains. I know goodbye is just minutes away... Oh man, Oman I just don't want to leave you...
Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay goes beyond being just another resort or hotel, it has a heart and soul; but more impressively it has a conscience.
The ultimate VIP treatment
Your stay begins before you leave home. Preferences for size of slipper, bathrobe, toiletries, entertainment, movies, music and drinks are gathered in advance. Even the pillow menu offers more choice than many restaurants. Shall you try Buckwheat, feather, isotonic, water based or snore reduction? For couples the romance factor has just increased 10 fold! Already you feel cared for, and most importantly understood. Yet you haven't even arrived.
Your first inkling that this is no ordinary holiday experience comes the moment you are asked whether you want to arrive by BMW 4W drive, speed boat or paraglider. Voted the world's Most Amazing Arrival Experience by Travel + Leisure magazine in 2008, Zighy Bay will redefine how you think about holidays.
It's time to shed the preconception that the time between stepping off the plane till you set your bags down at your destination is a necessary evil, marked by the drudgery of queues and hapless immigration officials. Each step you take on the tarmac elevates your celeb status. Forget lining up at customs jockeying for position at the carousel and baggage claim - that is SO not you. Instead you are escorted to a VIP lounge to sip drinks, thumb through a magazine while your airport liaison takes care of the tedious admin work. The only effort required of you is to follow your escort out of Dubai terminal to an awaiting Beemer 4x4 with passports stamped and luggage loaded.
Dressed in a traditional Dishdasha, your uniformed driver graciously welcomes you by name as you sink into the cream leather seats. Neck rests, ice cold water even a CD menu are provided.
A new world
As dusk descends, the landscape changes as industrialized oil and refining plants which emerge like spaceships from the flat dusty earth give way to all together more beautiful and moonscape scenery.
As road becomes ruble, the jagged Hajjar mountain range rises like a collection of desert bound icebergs on the horizon. You ascend through winding paths until you are unable to work out where the earth ends and the sky begins. Perhaps it's the anticipation of arrival or the ever present vertical drop, but your heart races as though on the way to a first date. Finally the moment arrives, as one last corner reveals a new world. Hundreds of metres below in the darkness like fallen stars, little lights sparkle. It's hard to differentiate what is real as opposed to reflections dancing off the ocean waves out of the darkness.
Six Senses Hideaway, Zighy Bay
Weaving down onto the low coastal plain of the range, Zighy Bay emerges in the moonlight ahead. From the small windows of the traditional Omani buildings, the soft lights of the Six Senses Hideaway welcome travellers. The resort is part of the environment, built of local stone and native materials, an architectural value which pervades throughout. The hour is late, but the team lines up outside waiting to receive you. Within moments you are sipping tea as warm smiles and introductions are made. It's like arriving back home after a very long time away. You will be told to adjust your watches to 'Zighy Time' (MC Hammer can't touch this!) but a time change seems fitting given the feeling of being transported into another dimension.
Within moments the warm air is flying past your face, as the buggy weaves through the sand paths towards the water. It is here where the villas are nestled, slumbering in the silence. Each in their own grounds, tucked away behind textured walls, archways and entrance lanes. His & hers bicycles perched by your doorway will provide transport and entertainment for the duration of the stay; although a buggy is just a call away should that be just too much effort!
By now you will already know that, when you turn the key and open the heavy wooden entrance door into your villa, who ever dreamed this place up knows what they are doing, and they should. The vision for this and other Six Senses Hideaways is born out of the marriage between a top fashion model and an Eaton/Oxford Alumni educated business man. Eva and Sonu have a passion for design and an unswerving commitment to the environment. The location of the Hideaway creates the reason for bringing a resort to life, not the other way around.
Home away from home
The entrance reveals a beautiful open air paved corridor which unwraps around the house to reveal the most stunning apparition. Illuminated at night your private infinity pool just beckons skinny dipping under the stars. The private sunken sala is stacked with orange and cream colour cushions, providing heat relief which is 2-3 degrees cooler when the sun is shining. Steps lead down towards your sand garden and rattan gates, which can be pulled back to reveal an uninterrupted view of powder sands of the ocean. Can life be anymore wonderful?
Yet upon entering your new home, you know that it just did. Think Flintstones crossed with Armani and you will probably nail the design. A king-size bed draws the eye, sheltered by an indulgent doona. Coffee table books are discretely positioned for relaxation around an indulgent sofa, big enough to seat an AFL team! A hard backed copy of 'The Inconvenient Truth' sits atop your reading deck as if to bring home the message; which is to embody a culture to care for not only the humans around us but the earth we have inherited to protect. Hand bound hessian books by the writing desk; provide further reading around Six Senses philosophy of SLOW LIFE (Sustainability, Local, Organic, Wholesome, Learning, Inspiring, Fun and Experiences).
Zighy Time
So what does one do with all this 'Zighy Time?' The real answer is nothing! This is the place to come to when you don't trust yourself to relax, or you have simply forgotten how. Whilst your Butler (or should I say personal EA) can arrange everything from scuba diving, canyoning, trekking, tours, city shopping and practically anything the heart desires. Most guests decide to just chill. In fact it's regularly commented on that even when all 82 villas (including 2 x Private Reserves) are occupied, the staff do wonder where all the people are.
Arabian Heaven
If there is one thing to set your watch by, it will be your treatments at the world famous luxury spa. The promise of 'Intelligent Luxury, Innovative Style, Redefining Experiences and Balancing Senses' unfolds as you are escorted into Arabian Heaven with sensory journeys which mix basil, mint and henna into hours of bliss. Whilst the therapists have been recruited from all over the world, there is commitment to learning with guest specialists and continual training. Soothing hands stoke, sweep and knead you softly into a slumbering state which takes you on a voyage beyond the fog of a jet lagged mind and body.
Just to prove that your body is a temple, don't worry for one second that your taste buds will be neglected. An international team of chefs create sensations for your palate commencing with a breakfast of buffet delights and a menu of smoothies which Boost Juice would be envious of. It morphs into a more formal restaurant in the evening hours. Your only stressful experience will be deciding on whether to order the slow roasted lamb or the Malaysian curry with a tempting array of seafood. Whilst dining, the ability of your hosts to anticipate and surprise continues. As if by magic the waiter lifts my handbag from the floor. A little stool appears for it to rest on. An emotive object has been raised to the emotional equivalent of someone caring for your pet Chihuahua! If you suddenly find yourself wrestling post curry to find a tissue, voila! You waiter appears with a box of tissues, cunningly disguised within a carved wooden box (move over Woolworths Home Brand!). It's these little things that will re-define your experience of being on holiday.
So you may now understand with just seconds to go how difficult and painful it is to say goodbye, to people who have become friends, not hosts and to the scenery which has patiently watched as an individual slowly unfolds from their crumpled state and becomes whole again.
I hate breakups, I hate goodbyes, I can only look up at the sky from my watery surroundings and say what I say to the people I love, when I can't bear to think I won't see them again. Au revoir, I will be back, you have captivated my heart and my soul and I can't wait till we are together again...
